Pink hypopyon in a patient with Serratia marcescens corneal ulceration

چکیده
A 65-year-old woman presented to the emergency ward at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary with 2 days of redness, irritation, photophobia, and diminished vision in her left eye. She was found to have a large central corneal ulcer with a small hypopyon. On the following day, after initiation of broad-spectrum antibiotics, the patient had improved symptoms but now had a 2-mm hypopyon that was distinctly pink in color. Cultures were positive for Serratia marcescens. A pink hypopyon, a rare occurrence, alerted the authors to a causative agent of Enterobacteriacae, either Klebsiella or Serratia. Immediate and intensive treatment was subsequently initiated.

Pink hypopyon: a sign of Serratia marcescens endophthalmitis.
Endogenous bacterial endophthalmitis in infants is uncommon. We recently examined and treated an infant who presented with pink hypopyon which followed a Serratia marcescens septicaemia. Culture of the aspirate from the anterior chamber showed no red blood cells, and grew Serratia marcescens, which was also isolated from the tip of the child's umbilical artery catheter. The presence of a pink h...

متن کاملPink Breast Milk: Serratia marcescens Colonization
Background Breast milk can turn pink with Serratia marcescens colonization, this bacterium has been associated with several diseases and even death. It is seen most commonly in the intensive care settings. Discoloration of the breast milk can lead to premature termination of nursing. We describe two cases of pink-colored breast milk in which S. marsescens was isolated from both the expressed br...
متن کاملFactors influencing pigment production in a mutant strain of Serratia marcescens.
A high frequency of mutations affecting color production is characteristic of the HY strain of Serratia marcescens. After ultraviolet irradiation, mutants ranging from white, through pink and orange, to deep red shades darker than the wild type can be obtained (Labrum and Bunting, 1953). Many of the white and pink mutants emit diffusible substances which can be utilized by other color mutants g...
